What role does a shareholder play at an annual general meeting?
The purpose of an annual general meeting is to:
- Elect officers and directors
- Elect auditors
- Approve financial statements
- Approve previous AGM minutes
- Pass resolutions
- Advise the shareholders on how their company is doing
- Set date for next years’ annual general meeting
Basically, a shareholder owns part of the company and is at the annual general meeting to represent their investment. Shareholders are asked to vote on all of the above and are invited to ask questions at the end of the meeting. To prepare for an annual general meeting insofar as to what questions you may want to ask and to generally have a broader knowledge of the company, it would be prudent to read the annual report, as well as any interim reports or newsletters. Should you not have received any of this material, call the company and they will send it to you.
